Alternative uses for paperclips

Paperclips have been around for over 140 years – so it's no surprise that people have found some alternative uses for the little wire paper-holders.

Here are just a few examples showcasing the versatility of the common paperclip:

Cherry pit remover. This tip might save you some frustration this summer: unfold the paperclip so that it looks like a very boxy "S" shape. Push it into the cherry until it hits the pit. Hook the curve of the paperclip under the pit, then pull it up and out.

Device re-setter. Many electronics come with reset buttons that can only be triggered through a pin-sized hole. If your computer is frying and you've gone through all the ballpoint pens in your house trying to hit the reset button, reach for a paperclip instead. Once unbent, they're the perfect size for the job.

Minimalist bookmark. This one is self-explanatory.

Clip your chips. Paperclips perform just as nicely as any marketed "Chip-bag clip" – and cost a fraction of the price. Paperclip your snack and cereal bags shut to seal in freshness.

Your zipper's stunt double. If the zipper pull on your favourite jacket or bag breaks, slide a paperclip in its place. It's a sturdy and practical replacement (or a great temporary zip if you can't get it repaired as soon as you like!)

Place of residence. Alright... so this use doesn't exactly work for everyone – but it certainly did for Kyle MacDonald! The Canadian blogger started with one red paper clip and traded it up until – 14 trades later – he ended up with a house! To read more about his story, check out his blog here.

If you have any paperclip tips to add, post them in a comment below!

Have a lovely Wednesday,
