APPLICANT #7: Quinn Sonmor

Quinn Sonmor is a 19-year-old student from Calgary.

Here is Quinn's current situation:

I am a student at SAIT and am in the Professional Cooking Program, It’s amazing how things that are usually reserved for kitchen can be applied in a lot of other jobs. Because of kitchens I am extremely determined and hard working and I always want to put the best product out possible. I am a very self motivated and creative person which is a necessity for this job.

Here is Quinn's blog post:

As you bring in your bags from your shopping trip you realize how much more stuff you came home with versus the amount that you went to the mall for. In the store it was nothing but positive enforcement for the item, “oh yeah! I will totally use this”, “it will totally match that outfit”, or even simply “SHINY!” But now that you are home it’s nothing but a rock in your stomach because of that stupid purchase... “What about groceries?”, “I already owe so much on my credit card.” “I won’t have enough money to go out with my friends!” are all things that run through your mind.

So this is a great tactic for avoiding that whole mess, I like to have a list. (yes, I know kind of lame but I can’t live without this list!) On this list I have a need and want categories.  In the need it obviously things that I need, so if a pair of shoes are falling apart BAM! On the need list it goes. I may not get to buying it right away, but I won’t forget about it either. On the want part it is usually things like new sunglasses, a new duvet blanket and the list goes on.

What’s beneficial is that when I go to the mall and I go to buy something I don’t really need, the first thing I think of is how far I have pushed back buying the want/need things on my list.  Also if I am going to the mall I like to bring cash and leave my debit and credit cards at home. The trick is to make buying frivolous things subtlety more inconvenient. You are less likely to buy something if it is slightly inconvenient for you to do so.

And if you realize that you really do want that “impulse item” put it on your want list at home and get it next time you go to the mall. This eliminates those stupid needless things collecting dust in the closet.
