Credit card mistakes to avoid
Everyone needs a credit card at some point in their lives. There are very, very few people who will never own a credit card. In life, you need to make big purchases and that is what credit cards help us out with. But mistakes can be made when it comes to credit cards. They can give you a bad credit score and they can also give you debt. You need to avoid that.
So here are some tips that I found on Banknerd.ca on how to keep track of keeping your credit score safe and debt levels in check.

1. Keep only the Necessary Credit Cards
A mistake that many people make is that they think they should have a bunch of credit cards. But this is a mistake. This sends a warning to lenders saying that you cannot survive without credit. You need lenders to be on your side when making big decisions such as taking out loans or a mortgage for a house. And don't get store credit cards. Just stick with the normal credit cards. Overall, it is best to have only 2-3 credit cards.
2. Maxing out your Credit Limit
Just because you have a credit limit, doesn't mean that you have to use it all. Some people subconciously feel pressured to stick around their credit limit. But you don't have to. You don't want to appear as though you are dependant on credit. Live within your means, and make purchases based on what you need rather than what you think you need.
3. Late Payments
This might be one of the most important mistakes someone can make. "Credit card late fees are one of the biggest wastes of money a person can make. You will be paying a good bit of money for absolutely nothing. Avoid getting charged; make your payments and you will never see yourself in this situation." -Banknerd.ca
4. Monitor your Spending
Look over your credit card bill! If you take 2 minutes to scan over your purchases this can save you lots of money! "You never know when you will be charged twice for something, or even worse if identity theft occurred. A few minutes each month may end up saving you a good bit of money." -Banknerd.ca
5. Poor Credit Card Choices
Another big mistake is picking a credit card that does not benefit you in any way. Different credit cards can have different benefits. "Take time while choosing your credit card; do not pick one out randomly. Always ask yourself whether the credit card is the right one for you, and if it will be able to provide you any benefits in the long run." -Banknerd.ca
6. Paying just the minimum
This is the last mistake that lots of first time credit card users make. "By paying the minimum amount due you will find yourself taking years to get out of debt, not to mention you will probably still be using your credit card in the process, making the cycle go on forever. If you are serious about getting out of debt, start paying more than just the minimum and you will see results." -Banknerd.ca
So don't make those little mistakes that you could end up paying for in the future. Take the time to think before you spend and go over your purchases. It is worth it!
