Lisa's Challenge Blog: Top Three Issues
Editor's note: We challenged all of our finalists to write a blog post. "From your own experience, what are the top 3 financial issues facing your generation?"
From my personal experience, the top 3 financial issues facing my generation would include, but not be limited to, balancing our spending, a lack of knowledge for future planning and simply just not having enough.
What I mean by balancing our spending is being able to make choices of what to responsibly spend our money on and how to do this without feeling deprived of having fun. As we grow up in an exciting consumer era, there are always new products, activities and opportunities available. The ability to balance our spending between our wants and our needs will continue to be a skill to develop and expand on.
As a whole, I believe that our generation lacks knowledge in the world of all our financial options. As a 21 year old, I personally lack a clear understanding of proactive measures and planning I could be currently taking. At the same time that it is clear to me that I do not know what each and every one of my options are, I also do not know where I would go to find this specific, honest and clear type of knowledge. With all of the financial information presented to us, I also find it hard to know which information we should trust and which direction to put our hard earned money towards.
Because there are so many options of what we can be doing with our money, it seems that with an average income of a 17 – 25 year old, it is almost impossible to have enough money to do it all. With the opportunity to travel, attend post-secondary education and start a solid foundation for our future, I believe that our never ending options outweigh the average financial capacity of our age demographic.
As we are faced with various financial issues, it is reality that we will be dealing with these for the rest of our lives. To be provided with current, trustworthy and relevant financial advice from the Servus Credit Union Spokester is an innovative and exciting tool for us as a generation and I would love to be the one providing this type of conversation and education.
