Mother's Day: sensitive issue?

In case you didn't realize it yet, Mother's Day is right around the corner (it's this coming Sunday). I thought I'd bring it up before the weekend, so that you don't find yourself scrambling for ideas and gifts on Saturday (if you're unprepared, it ends badly; this is experience talking).

I came across a touchy article about Mother's Day that came out in February of last year. It talks about how one school decided to 'ban' the making of Mother's Day cards in class. The principal believed that it was a sensitive issue for some children, considering five percent of the student body are not in contact with their birthmothers. Peeved parents brought up the point that the cards don't necessarily need to be made for mothers – they can easily be made for relatives or neighbours.

I find this story very similar to the "Merry Christmas" vs. "Happy Holidays" battles that surface before Christmas each year. It's another case where tradition suddenly seems to clash with sensitivity issues. What's your take on it?

If you need some inspiration on how to wow Mom this year, check out Mother's Day Central. What are you planning to do for Mother's Day? Share your ideas in a comment below.
