New Canadian music

I am in a very happy mood today. Yesterday was the release date of the latest Sam Roberts Band album, Love at the End of the World.

It's remarkable how big of an impact a song or an album can make (and not in a Rick Astley way, either). I personally find that I appreciate artists who are relevant to me in more ways than one. Taking the Sam Roberts Band as an example: I love their music and their imagery, but that's only the starting point. They were my first rock concert, so their songs bring back great memories of their live show. I also take pride in the fact they are Canadian.

Actually, Canadian musicians have really made some great strides in the past few years. Canadian listening is no longer limited to Celine (thank goodness!). From Billy Talent to Feist to k-os to the Arcade Fire, there's a Canadian chart-topper for every genre.

If you're on Facebook and feel like digging for some new homegrown tunes, there's a pretty cool group you can join called Canada is Obviously the New Music Capital of the World. It lists a wide range of Canadian performers. Why not use this Webthing of the Week to listen to some new material for free?

What are some Canadian artists that you listen to? Post your answer in a comment below.

Well, I am returning to my headphones now, but here's a Sam Roberts music video for you to enjoy!
