Under 25 eh? But above 19? That's just stupid!

We are getting so many forms submitted from the site for e-updates, Young & Free account sign-ups, poll ideas and many new members of our Facebook group and followers on Twitter. It is so great to see the participation.

We have had a number of notes wondering what's up with the age restrictions. Here are a couple that represent the main questions.

"Under 25 eh? But above 19? That's just stupid!"

and...

"If the age limit on the acount is 17 to 25, why is there a different age limit on the contest? I was wondering because I think the whole idea of being the voice of today's youth is absolutely great. I am an 18-year-old male and I would really like to be part of this contest."

First of all, thanks for speaking up. So what's with the age restrictions? Well, we gave age considerable thought prior to launching Young & Free. To qualify for the Young & Free account, you have to be 25 and under. Since we already have a free junior account for those up to age 17, it made sense to have the Young & Free account start right after that.

For the spokesperson, we have restricted the age from 19 to 25 for legal reasons. This person must be a legal adult and be able to work without parental consent. In addition, the spokesperson must be able to drive him or herself around Northern Alberta to different events. Even though the legal driving age is 16, we feel that it is necessary to have a few years of driving experience under your belt. That's how we arrived at 19.

If you are not 19 yet, don't despair. Keep your enthusiasm going. Who knows, if this goes really well, we may be looking for another spokesperson for 2009!
