2011 Scholarship Entry #76: Jessica MacDonald
We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.' Marian Wright Edelman
Obesity. It is one of the greatest challenges our society is facing. It's been labelled an epidemic for which there are no ""quick fix"" solutions. People need to be educated on the health risks and encouraged to adopt positive changes each day in their lives. The changes seen over the last few decades in the way we eat are the main cause of the problem. Larger portion sizes, processed foods with little or no nutrient value, artery-clogging fast foods....this has led to the majority of our population being classified as obese. Our healthcare system is pumping millions into heart and stroke research, but we cannot keep up to the demand. From young, obese children carrying poor eating habits into adulthood, to the many adults being seen earlier than ever before with diabetes and heart disease - the evidence is clear. Our daily food choices are hurting our bodies and quality of life. Changes to the food industry and educating the public has been a priority, but the process is slow and still lacking in many areas.
To look at me now, you would never know that I used to weigh over 250 pounds at only twenty one years' old. Two years later, I've lost over 100 pounds and kept it off for well over a year! I adopted a new lifestyle of ""eating right"" and strived each day to persevere. Throughout this journey, my actions were inspiring everyone around me - family friends, coworkers, and many people in my community - I am a success story! People witnessed my success and knew that I did it by making healthy food choices. My personal experience has motivated me to help others. I want to inform people about the reality of their food choices and help to bring about change in food industry standards.
To achieve this goal, I am excited to be attending the University of Alberta this fall to become a Registered Dietician. This career will allow me to bring positive changes to many peoples' lives and overall health. Some people wish for world peace, I wish for a healthier world. I know my story will inspire others, who can learn from me how to make the right choices for a happier, healthier life. This battle taught me many lessons and I am eager to share that knowledge with the goal of creating a healthier world. The world is big, and I'm just one person, but I know firsthand that with focus and determination each day, I can help lead huge accomplishments for the future.
