Scholarship Essay Entry – Adrian W.
Leadership is a demonstration of interpersonal and motivational skills focused on the betterment of others and the community. I am a self-motivated, committed, and active member of my community. I am inspired to make a difference in my community through my leadership contributions, community efforts, and volunteer work I have taken part in.
I have strong values in culture, volunteerism, and leadership and that is why I put so much effort into what I do. I have been a Ukrainian Scout for 12 years and have become involved in volunteering my time for this organization. I have participated in many camps, and because of my communications and supervisory skills, I was appointed as a youth scout leader. I have had the opportunity to set a positive, inspirational example for younger scouts and have taken on active roles in organizational, and managerial functions. I have successfully organized a major communications initiative using advanced internet technology, linking Edmonton and international Ukrainian scouts together; managed and executed a 50-person ski trip, and was selected as one of the few elite Ukrainian Scouts to attend a National Leadership Camp. I have significantly advanced my individual development throughout the course of my scouting opportunities, and have personally felt the appreciation of the community as a result of my work—this is my inspiration and determination to continue future youth leadership initiatives.
In addition to my work with the Ukrainian Scouting organization, I was able to showcase my initiative, interpersonal skills, and positive role modeling at my High School, which I just graduated from, with the Senior Class Mentor Team over the last two years. Duties included welcoming new students to the school, to help them overcome their intimidation of high school, as well as assisting with various events, celebrations, and functions. I am very proud to say I was awarded the Premier Citizenship Award as well as my high schools 2nd highest award over the last year.
After my successful graduation from high school last spring, I am very pleased to be enrolled at the University of Alberta this fall. Beginning in the Faculty of Arts, my ultimate goal is to continue into the Faculty of Business, as well as eventually pursue a career in International Business development.
In my personal time I continue my love for Ukrainian culture with my Ukrainian Dance Band, which I founded and continue to lead and manage. I would like to continue to promote, engage, and experience Ukrainian culture. Whether it be any culture, I would like to demonstrate to the public how important it is to keep our ancestors’ culture and spirit alive, so many can experience the wonderful languages, traditions, and values that are instilled in the people of our multicultural society.
