Scholarship Essay Entry – Alexandra M.
In September of 2009 I began volunteering at Holy Spirit Academy, an elementary school in High River, Alberta. I help in a variety of ways, including reading with the kids, helping ESL students with homework and extra reading, providing support for children with special needs, and offering a hand with experiments, gym classes, and art projects. I found myself enjoying the time with the students and I was excited by the opportunity to influence and teach. I received my Bachelor of Arts Degree and after my volunteer experience I decided to apply to the education program at St. Mary’s University College in Calgary.
I was accepted to the program and will be starting my first year this fall. I have chosen to become an elementary school teacher because children at this age are excited to come to school each day. They love to discover new things about themselves and the world around them. I want to nurture and encourage this excitement, so that when junior high and high school become more difficult, the student will rise to the challenge and keep their love of learning. I want to be a teacher who gives students tools to use throughout their lives.
As a teacher in the community, I will not only be in a position to work with students in my classroom, but also their families. Together with their parents, I will teach children to develop a positive attitude towards school, responsibility, authority, and community involvement. I will encourage children to become involved with their community through volunteer opportunities, participating in local organizations and by becoming aware of social justice issues locally and in the global community.
I have a special interest in families new to Canada. I want to be involved with and enhance programs which help new Canadian citizens integrate into and understand the language and culture of this country and community. Through volunteering I was able to work with and assist ESL students. My goal is to ensure that students are not left behind because of a language barrier. As a teacher I will work together with parents and students and provide any extra support needed to ensure every student succeeds.
