Scholarship Essay Entry – Ashlyn R.
My name is Ashlyn and I have recently graduated from Jasper Place high school in Edmonton. In the fall I am attending the University of Alberta and have been accepted into the faculty of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences. I am majoring in Environmental and Conservation Sciences and my ambition is to eventually work with an environmental company to use collective action in creating my vision to make our world a better place.
I have always been passionate about the environment and protecting it. My interest in environmental studies has arisen from a concern over global warming and increasing pollution. I am concerned about damage to the eco-system due to harvesting of non-renewable resources such as oil (tar sands) and the negative influence it is producing towards animals (by destroying their habitats) and future generations and overall our earth. Saving our environment and encouraging others to take action is my top priority and I will truly enjoy my education in this field over the next four years.
With an education in Environmental Sciences, I hope to learn approaches to contributing solutions to help with environmental and natural resource issues as well as promote awareness of these issues. In recent years many forms of alternative energy sources have been developed that will have a positive effect on the environment, which along with recycling, will help in reducing our ecological footprint. It is important for individuals to realize the negative impact we have on our environment. I hope to inspire individuals and contribute to a global action in conserving our natural resources and our earth.
I have a strong ecological perspective and will gain a firm foundation of knowledge and understanding through my Environmental and Conservation major. Although undecided at the moment on what my specific role will be, I am certain that my education in Environmental Sciences will be my first step towards helping my community and addressing some of the environmental problems facing the planet and future generations. I am determined and prepared to succeed, and to making a difference.
