Scholarship Essay Entry – Bailey A.

I have been accepted at the University  of Alberta in the General Science Program.  At this point I have yet to identify my major and minor subjects.  In high school I was strong in calculus and biology.  The courses I will be taking in my first year will be math, biology, chemistry,  and English.  In subsequent years,  I will narrow my focus.  At  this point I don't know  how well I will do my  first year but I will try my very best.
 
I have thought about Nursing and  this career speaks for itself.   If I were to go into the Faculty of Nursing  I may not change the world for society's sake but help change the perception of the world with the many patients I would help on a daily basis.  I have also thought of nursing abroad.   We have so much to be thankful for  in Canada.   It would be gratifying to help those who need assistance for more than we take for granted.
 
As I have done well in math,  I have also thought of pursuing an education degree.    Sharing my abilities with math students in an elementary, junior high or high school would be most satisfying.   I know  my tutorage would open doors for others.  They, in turn,  may continue and improve their  understanding of mathematics.   Who knows what one or more of my students  could accomplish.
 
 At this point  it is difficult for me to be pragmatic and answer. " How I am inspired to change the world?"  I cannot express  my excitement at attending the University of Alberta.  I know in my heart that having the opportunity to attend the University of Alberta is a life changing experience for me.   It will therefore  be  an opportunity to change the world for others  as I hope to encourage them to pursue post secondary education as well.
 
I am not naive in relation to future costs of attending the University of Alberta.  My parents told me to save money since I was very little for the purpose of  attending  a college or university.   I have worked at  part time jobs since grade nine to pay for some of the university expenses.   My parents and I  chose  Servus  Credit  Union as my  Financial Institution for my savings.     My parents started saving for me shortly after I was born.  They also have been  long time members of the  Servus Credit Union and its predecessors - over thirty years.
