Scholarship Essay Entry – Brendan W.

My name is Brendan, I’m 18 years old and currently enrolled in the 1st Year Bachelor of Science, Pre-Med program at Red Deer College. Both my parents and my sister are College alumni and by all accounts, it is a wonderful institution and a great place to start my post secondary education . I certainly look forward to meeting new people and the exciting challenges and rewarding experiences that are pretty much inherent in such a large and dynamic facility. The fun begins on September 7th!

The dreams, ambitions, and vision you ask about have been a work in progress since childhood. I’m a firm believer that we are a product of our environment, and I’m proud to say I am living proof of what can happen when we are provided with the love, support, encouragement, and personal responsibility for reaching our goals and aspirations . My mom is my biggest fan. From as far back as I can remember, she has been the single biggest influence on the person I am, and the success and accomplishments I have achieved in my young life. If I was too shy, she would introduce me. If I felt something was out of my reach, she would just push me a little closer. Long before it became a political catch phrase, the words “ yes you can” were frequently spoken at our dinner table. It was no coincidence that my interests invariably attracted her interest. The encouragement and active participation she has so willingly provided is something that cannot go unrecognized. I would be the first to admit - the scholarship should go to my mom – “honours with distinction” in Bachelor of Parenting!

My love of science and the success I have enjoyed in my education and work experience has provided me with the tools and personal traits that I feel are paramount in the rigorous and challenging field of medicine. I am a trained and certified life guard and teach water safety and learn to swim programs for the City of Red Deer Recreation department. The many positive comments and supportive feedback I receive from the students, parents, and my employer is something I take a great deal of pride in. Getting the children started, and watching them develop and gain confidence is a reward in itself. In addition, I have volunteered as a camp counsellor with the Red Deer Youth and Volunteer Centre where you can see (and experience) the value of leadership, encouragement, and the joyful smile of positive influence.

It’s my hope and dream that I might one day provide professional medical services or scientific research in the field of medical science. With an education system that is recognized and respected around the world, I would be free to work, live, and volunteer wherever the need is greatest. With my mom as the ‘enabler”, I certainly intend to give it my best shot.
