Scholarship Essay Entry – Haley R.

My name is Haley, I have lived, worked and been educated in Whitecourt, Alberta all of my life except for two years that I lived in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. I have maintained honours grade 7 through grade 12 and I will be attending the University of Alberta full time for a minimum of 6 years and a maximum of 8 years. Right now at the age of 17 a degree in Science is my goal, which I would like to use for one of two very different paths.

A medical degree would be my first choice, transferring into medicine after 3 years. I have always lived in a small town, with very few doctors to handle all of the workload I would like to be part of the solution by working here in Whitecourt or another small town

Second, I have worked at A&W for the last 2.5 years and most of my co workers are from the Philippines. Listening to their stories of home and working in Canada also has me thinking of a degree in international/immigration law so I can help them receive the fair treatment and rights they deserve. A degree in science is the first step to take for both my options in the future.

My parents have always felt that sports and family are the most important part of growing up and have made sure that I and my siblings are always very busy. I think it has paid off because we all have goals that other kids my age do not have.  Any scholarships I do receive will not only help me this year but in the next 2 to 3 years as well. I am living with family in Edmonton which has cut back the overall costs of the year by about $5000.00. I will be working in the Edmonton area to help cover daily expenses of life such as groceries, and other variable expenses.

Thank you to the Credit Union for this opportunity, if not for organizations like yourselves, so many of us would not even be able to consider University.
