Scholarship Essay Entry – Jennifer G.
As a young adult going out into the world, it can be extremely difficult choosing a path to follow. I think this can be said for many individuals from all faucets of life. Therefore, we must choose paths in which we can successfully make a difference in our world. It is up to us to rise to the challenge of creating a positive and cohesive environment. We must be the change we want to see in the world.
To the average person this may seem to be an unrealistic challenge with no feasible solution. These are the individuals who coast through life, giving no more than what is required of them. These are the individuals who think one large solution is needed to fix the world's problems. There are times when several small acts of humility and kindness make the biggest difference. These acts can come in many different forms.
I have always had a passion for helping people. As a child I thought I could only help people by fixing the bones in their broken arm or giving them cough medicine when they were sick. I soon discovered that there were other ways in which I could help those in need. My goal is to complete a Bachelor of Commerce at Grant MacEwan University. My ambition is to major in Human Resources where I will be able to assist individuals in the work place whether it be finding possible job positions or resolving issues amongst the workplace. Entering a field such as Business gives me several opportunities to make a difference in the world within a working environment.
Over the past several years I have discovered alternative ways in which I can help people. One of which is through my own passions. Figure skating has been a huge part of my life for the past nine years. Although I do not plan on continuing to compete, skating will forever be a part of my life. Over the years, I have learned several life lessons through this sport and have made discoveries about myself that have only been made possible through my persistence and dedication. Skating has not only taught me the importance of physical health, but the importance of responsibility, independence, work ethic, sportsmanship, and most importantly determination. It is my goal to share these lessons with young children by achieving my Level 1 coaching designation. It would be an honour and privilege to share my joy for this sport with others.
It can be argued that for an individual to make a difference in the world they must do something extraordinary. It is evident that this is not always the case. Mother Theresa said, "In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love."
