Scholarship Essay Entry – Karen D.
I was born on May 29, 1992 in Lacombe, Alberta. I grew up on a pig farm in Ponoka County with two younger brothers. When I was ten years old my mom was diagnosed with cancer. It was hard for my dad to take care of the farm and my brothers and me so my grandparents took care of us. I lived there for a year and got to see my mom many times. I would be at the hospital visiting my mom a lot and I got to know the nurses very well. They were nice, kind, and compassionate. The nurses made the situation a little easier to deal with. My mom died when I was eleven years old. My brothers and I then moved back with my dad on the farm. Two weeks later an accident happened and the barn caught on fire. It was destroyed. Our family made it through these incidents with the love and support of each other. I am very perseverant, which helped me to manage in these situations.
In junior high I was in basketball, soccer, track and field, and cross country. I also helped at a kids day camp for one week every summer. I love interacting with people and helping others out. In high school I was on a basketball team in grade ten and I was student council treasurer in grade eleven. I worked as a janitor cleaning for five years. I have been milking at a dairy for almost two years. Also, I am currently working at a vet clinic and have been for the last three years. I have a strong work ethic and can be counted on to get the job done. I was president of student council and I was president of the graduation committee at my high school. I have strong leadership skills and qualities. I also help out in my church’s nursery to allow mothers to relax for a bit. I volunteer once a week at Lacombe Hospital. I love to be involved with my community and be around people. I always want to be making a positive impact in the community around me. I am friendly, polite, and like to set a positive example.
Now I am going to become a registered nurse. I want to help, encourage, and be there for people like my mom. This is why I want to be a nurse and this is why I am so motivated and compelled to become one. I am caring and compassionate, which will help me to succeed as a nurse. I will continue to work hard at my goal to become a registered nurse and make a difference in other people’s lives.
