Scholarship Essay Entry – Katy C.
My name is Katy Cotton and I am currently a student at the University of Lethbridge enrolled in the Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education program. In the fall of 2010 I will begin my first semester in the Education practicum program. To date I have acquired my music degree and have three semesters to complete. Although my major is in music, I plan to explore teaching in the field of Special Education. Based on personal experience I strongly believe that I could make a difference in providing effective educational guidance to students who struggle academically.
As a student with learning disabilities myself, I can easily relate to students who find school exhausting and arduous due to learning difficulties. My vision is to inspire children to value the benefits of a good education no matter what the circumstances. In my experience it is possible for anyone to achieve success in school with hard work, perseverance, and support from the people around you. The people that motivated me the most were the ones who recognized my potential and had the patience to guide me to success despite constant discouragement from professionals who suggested that my goals were unattainable. In my chosen career I hope to be able to help children embrace education and achieve their goals like I have done. With the assistance and support that I received I am able to do well in university and maintain a 3.75 GPA. As an educator I hope to us my own insights and experiences to provide struggling students with a structured program that adheres to their academic and emotional needs Often early intervention and a supportive environment is all that is required. It is important to recognize that students with differentiated learning styles have an equal chance at making something of themselves. To this end I hope to be a teacher that inspires kids to hold on to their dreams by teaching them the values that led to my own success and believe that I have the knowledge and desire to accomplish this. I feel that it would be my privilege and duty to serve these students to the best of my ability .
