Scholarship Essay Entry – Mark S.
Les Brown once said "Help others achieve their dreams and you will achieve yours". I thoroughly agree with this quote and believe that there is no better way to gain satisfaction in life than by spending time helping others. This is why I have devoted much of my time to serving others through various organisations and why I plan to continue to help others at home and abroad throughout my life.
I have always been very active in my community volunteering for organisations such as Habitat for Humanity and by helping preserve the environment by participating in garbage clean ups in my city. I also played high levels of both hockey and football and applied my knowledge of these sports to help out younger players by volunteering for both the local minor football and minor hockey associations in St. Albert. Helping my local community is very important to me but I also believe in helping other communities around the world, especially in developing countries. This is why in 2006 I participated in a missionary trip to Mexico with my church to build houses for the poor near the city of Ensenada.
In the future I plan to continue my volunteer work and to give back to my community. I am currently enrolled at the University of Alberta for engineering and I plan to use my skills and knowledge in this field of study to help the less fortunate by participating in Engineers Without Borders projects in developing countries. While in university I want to apply for a transfer program that would allow me to study abroad for a semester, preferably somewhere in Europe such as Germany. In the future I also hope to get accepted into a master's program in either chemical or biomedical engineering. Along with volunteering overseas, I plan to continue my volunteer work at local sports associations and non profit organisations such as Habitat for Humanity. I believe that helping others will help me achieve my dreams in life, and I hope that by helping others I will inspire people to volunteer their time to help others as well.
