Scholarship Essay Entry – Matthieu A.
I have always dreamed of making a difference in the world through participation in ground-breaking research, and it is for this reason, that last year I began my bachelor degree in engineering at the University of Alberta. These dreams were soon slowed as I realized that much of engineering has less to do with new discoveries and focuses primarily on maintaining and improving technology already developed. Unwilling to give up my dream, I searched for a discipline of engineering that focused on research and development of new technologies, and I found this in the nanotechnology option of the engineering physics program. It is my belief that this program will be the gateway to a fulfilling, challenging and motivating career that will allow me to make a considerable difference in our world.
Completing my degree in the nanotechnology option of engineering physics will open innumerable cutting-edge research opportunities. Because nanotechnology is an emerging field, there are no limits on research possibilities, and it will be up to our generation to make the important decisions that will determine where this research will lead. It is my vision that research in this field will be able to solve many of the world’s problems from common medical conditions to pollution, and I am anxious to be playing an influential part in this research. As a professional in the field, I will have significant influence in the important decisions and so will have the ability to ensure that the research will go in a direction that will have the most beneficial impact on the largest number of people.
While these research goals are not yet achievable with my current level of education, I intend to continue to make a difference in a more intimate and personal way by continuing my work as a climbing instructor at Vertically Inclined Rock Gym. At Vertically Inclined I work with people of all ages, instructing them on basic rope skills and climbing techniques in a comfortable environment, while building their self-esteem through continuous support and encouragement. Working as a climbing instructor has given me the opportunity to change the lives of just a few, but the feeling of knowing the difference I have made is what motivates me to challenge myself to make an even greater difference.
I am confident that through dedication to my academic pursuits and a commitment to excellence, I will be able to fulfill my vision for a better world. My continued work with new climbers in my community will continue to motivate and inspire me, as I strive to make an even more substantial impact on the world through breakthrough research in nanotechnology and engineering physics.
