Scholarship Essay Entry – Mitchal L.

Ever since I was a kid I have always had the want to help people. I did things that would create other people to smile even if it hindered me. In gr.9 I went on a mission trip with my school to Juarez, Mexico. It was amazing, and at the same time, heartbreaking. Tires on houses to hold the roof on, children running around playing with broken bikes and flat soccer balls. What blew my mind was that these kids were happy. It was like a flat soccer ball was the coolest thing they had, like a kid who just got a new game system back in Canada. This hit me hard, as I knew that there are kids in Canada who would be happy if they got something, even if it was worthless to most people.

Years ago my dad created a business; it was a child and youth ranch. He took in kids whose parents would not want them because of a disability or they just simply didn’t want them, and gave them a new fresh start at life. Now this came with great difficulty as these kids who were given up by their own parents, thought that no one cared for them. Programs were created to try and help put hope in these kids’ lives. They have worked in many ways, as some kids have gone on to graduate and go out on their own.  My dad and I brainstorm many times, of things we can do to help these kids, and a great idea popped out.

I am going into Business Admin. – Year 1 and then on to Business Management for my second year at NAIT.  Our idea was that I can create a program with these kids, on the subject of business. Taking the basics of managing a business or even the knowledge of how to create/start a business could give these kids lots of information about the real world and how to succeed successfully.  I would brainstorm business ideas with them and do simulations to teach them what would be the best thing to do also give them real life situations and problems. A venture would be to open up a small farm and every youth will have livestock where they have to feed and care for until they can sell them in a market that we would create. My goal is that it would boost their self esteem as they would believe that they can do something with there life. No one person can change the world, but together we can try. I would try to give kids hope in their lives, and prove to them that they have the ability to make a great life for themselves, and that they are cared by people.
