Scholarship Essay Entry – Nikki H.
While volunteering on a mission trip in Cambodia, I experienced the stunning landscapes and the bold temples that highlight the extraordinary history of this country. I visited the devastating site of the countries genocide. After seeing all these powerful sights, I couldn’t stop thinking about the children I had looked after at an orphanage located in the country’s capital city. These beautiful orphans of Cambodia truly inspired me. They were HIV positive and because of this, did not have many visitors. When we arrived at the orphanage the children lit up with excitement. They wanted to play, but mostly they wanted to be held and comforted. Holding hands and playing prompted the biggest and brightest smiles and their happiness radiated their sober surroundings. I learned from these insightful children the importance of recognizing and enjoying life’s experiences and capturing the mirth of everyday happenings. The children could easily turn a negative situation into a positive.
I will never forget the connection I felt with these children during this life-changing experience. I felt empowered knowing that being engaged with these children fostered trust, respect and dignity. I am inspired and committed to making a difference to children experiencing difficult challenges. I hope to be able to make a difference in the lives of children so that they, in turn can make a difference in the lives of others.
To pursue my dream I enrolled in, and have completed my first year in the Bachelor of Arts Degree Program majoring in Psychology at the University of Alberta. My ambition is to continue my studies and achieve a Master’s degree and potentially my doctorate in the field of Psychology. My vision is to specialize in community services working with young people, to help facilitate personal growth, and support them in making positive choices. I will contribute to my community by counseling and supporting young people by providing them with the resources they need to enhance the quality of their lives.
I am interested in continuing to volunteer in non-profit organizations, reaching out to those in my own country as well as those overseas. My primary concern is the welfare of orphaned children and being able to give them hope. I have an enthusiastic and contagious attitude and I hope that I will be able to inspire children to share their eagerness and to develop and achieve their personal dreams.
Harriet Tubman once said, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” I am a dreamer; I believe I have the enthusiasm and ingenuity to make a positive change in the world and make it a better place. Through education and hard work, I will carry out my dreams to better the world.
