Repairing the injuries of Healthcare Nationally and Internationally: The Positive affects of Roxanne Pinson’s Ambitious yet Promising Dreams
“ We have fewer physician’s per capita in Canada than almost any other industrialized country “—Dr. Peter Barrett
As mentioned previously, there is no doubt about it that for the past decade, and currently, the shortage of Physicians in Canada has detrimental effects in all aspects of health care such as: rural medicine; wait time for surgeries; and even the search for a committed family doctor. In addition to these local health care complications there are obvious global medical issues in third world countries. As a student going into my second year of university, I have been privileged enough to immerse myself in the clinical environment of a third world country—Peru. From this volunteer experience, as well as recent research in this field, I began to understand how underprivileged, yet innocent people of third world nations are in desperation of medical assistance. Not only do I aspire to become a Physician one day, but also by attaining this title I wish to pursue several other projects as a Pediatrician. Through this essay you will see how my future plans as a Pediatrician will tackle the health care problems in our local and global community.
By fulfilling my undergrad, an MD and a specialization in pediatrics I have several plans I wish to pursue that will benefit the community locally. Being a Physician is already a humanitarian occupation that strives to help others before your own. If I were to practice as a physician, one of my main goals would be to join the Canadian Medical Association and voice out my opinion on how we should increase the acceptance rate of medical students across the country. This increase would benefit the nation by repairing the shortfall in doctors, ergo increasing the pro-activity and efficiency of the Canadian health care system. In addition, as a Pediatrician, my ultimate dream is to build a facility that will focus on providing long term care for children facing long term diseases. The facility would be smaller than a typical hospital, staffed comfortably and contain as many “home like” features as possible to ensure the comfort of the children.
Lastly, on a global perspective, once I am an experienced Pediatrician I plan to develop a humanitarian group similar to the “Foundation of International Medical Relief of Children”. This will be a group of voluntary Physicians and med- students who will travel to third world nations such as Peru, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Vietnam, Philippines…etc to provide medical treatments to those in impoverished areas; while lecturing about sanitation, HIV and TB. This would improve the local community by providing Canadian med students and physicians the opportunity to collaborate; thus improving the medical community. At an international level, it will provide service to the millions who cannot afford proper medical care. Although it is just one group, it is one step closer toward making a difference with the impoverished. Evidently my goals and ambitions as a Pediatrician aims to help the community locally and internationally.
