Scholarship Essay Entry – Tia S.

Growing up, I never knew what I wanted to be. Like any kid something fun and interesting was the main idea. The difficult part was choosing a path that I could imagine living everyday for the rest of my life.

It wasn’t until my grade twelve school year began that I decided to become a teacher. Perhaps it was the thought of my student career coming to an end that helped the decision along. Leaving school was not something I looked forward to. I have always enjoyed coming to school, and love learning interesting things. My mother has always noticed my patient attitude and determination.

For years I have been involved in babysitting and childcare, and have always found pleasure working with children. Simple things are fascinating in their minds, which absorb information without even realizing it. Showing kids how fun learning can be sounds like a rewarding task. It would be wonderful to go to work each day to a room full of smiling faces eager to learn because of my teaching.

As a student I’ve always felt safe, welcome, and accepted at school. I have had so many memorable times because of the people around me. School shouldn’t be something kids dread at the end of summer. School should be a place to make memories and friends, a place to learn and laugh. I could be the reason kids share stories of school at the dinner table, and put effort into their studies. I would like to think that down the road, students of mine will look back upon their school years with fond memories, as I do.

This fall I will begin my Bachelor of Science program at the Concordia University College of Alberta, which will be followed by my degree in Education. Hopefully, I will learn many skills and new creative activities to take into my own classrooms.
