Scholarship Essay Entry – Tyson H.

Facebook, twitter, and texting are an integral part of how people - especially young people - communicate with each other. While these communication tools are useful for keeping in touch with those whom we love, I fear that they are shaping an increasingly lonely and self-absorbed society. I fear that people aren't developing meaningful connections with each other, and that we are not spending enough time, and investing enough energy, in face to face interactions with our close friends and families. I want to be a part of movement towards a more intimate society based on genuine care and concern for our fellow humans.

I am thankful that I had the opportunity to work with at-risk youth for the past few years. Not only am I constantly reminded that I have much to be thankful for, I feel that I have made real connections with some of the youth. A lesson that I have taken away from my youth centre experience is that many underprivileged and at-risk youth are looking for nothing more than to feel loved, to feel important, and to feel supported. Feeling loved is one of the most basic human needs. Unfortunately, there are many people who don't get the love and attention that they require. I have seen many youth fall victim to the negative consequences of neglect. Therefore, by taking the time to listen attentively, I believe we can positively influence the emotional well-being of others.

I hope to continue to use what I learn in university to better myself, and to make positive contributions to my community. Upon completion of university, I will put my skills to use as a counselor or psychologist. In this fast paced world that we live in, we often lose sight of individual people and the day-to-day hardships that they face. It is easy to get lost in the struggle for personal gain, by focusing on the accumulation of prestige and material possessions. By continuing to shift my attention toward the needs of the people around me, and by encouraging others to do the same, I will be a part of a healthier tomorrow.
