Scholarship Essay Entry – Zennon W.
Every since I was a young child I have always been drawn to the outdoors and inspired by nature. Now that I am older I still love the outdoors but now I am aware of the destruction that can take place to the environment when people are inconsiderate and waste full resources. So for the last few years I have been trying to reduce the amount of water and electricity I consume and recycle just about everything that can be recycled. I have volunteered to help the scout’s plant trees in Alberta many times. I will always take the extra effort to help the environment and reduce my carbon foot print.
I will be attending the University of Calgary this fall. This is going to be my first year and I will be majoring in geology. By become a geologist I have hopes of finding alternative method for petroleum extraction that reduce the amount of destruction to the earth’s surface and habitat. Of course the oil sands production in Alberta will continue to grow but if I could just find a way to make the environmental impact of the process even just slightly greener it would help the environment immensely because over one million barrels of oil are produced every day in Alberta. I may also specialize into hydro or environmental geology because it focuses more on solving problems in the environment and this is very important to me.
Once I get my degree as a geologist I would also like to volunteer at elementary schools and teach the kids about recycling, not wasting resources and being green. My ambitions and passions have always been about nature and making small changes to our life style so we can lower the amount of waste and pollution created by our society. I dare to dream that we can make a difference in the world, so that we can preserve the beauty of our planet for future generations to come.
