T-Shirt Design Entry 9 – Robert M.
How does your design express the idea of building a better community?
I wanted to create a bold design that made people think, and look closer to the graphic to see its greater meaning. From afar, its a light bulb, but looking closer, is meant to demonstrate the idea of the world being in the hands of the young and free. I really wanted to emphasize the aspect of youth for a better tomorrow in this design, and the idea that youth are the light of the future.
During the brainstorming process, I knew I wanted this design to stay true to my personal design tastes, and be something that I could see other young adults wearing. This design was to meant to be a little edgier; in order to parallel the idea of thinking outside the box - which is a necessity for the youth of the future.
“Think globally, act locally” is a saying often used in human geography, and felt this was a fitting idea to changing the world. We mustn’t see the world as continents separated by water, but a union of peoples towards the common goals of peace, justice and creating a sustainable today, and tomorrow.
I expanded on that idea by including text on the back of the shirt that summarizes my front graphic, and the ideas I want people to leave with after reading and looking at the shirt. The front design of the t-shirt was meant to hold a certain ambiguity, that would inhibit thinking. Whereas the back was meant to clarify these “feel good” messages - which is why I placed the “Feel Good Ripple” logo there.
